Burnt Offerings is an immersive encaustic workshop that explores the transformative power of fire, wax, and ritual. You'll discover how shellac reacts to intense heat to create wild, organic patterns that can't be replicated by hand. Through guided demos and hands-on practice, you'll learn how to apply shellac, manipulate it with a torch, and layer custom color blends for luminous, one-of-a-kind effects.

We'll also incorporate handmade papers—some intentionally scorched or burned—collaging them into the wax to create textured, evocative surfaces. These charred fragments become visual records of transformation and decay, encouraging you to explore the tension between control and chaos. Working abstractly, you’ll engage with the process as a kind of creative ritual, using fire and repetition to tap into deeper instincts and expressive mark-making.

No painting or drawing experience is required—this class is designed to be beginner-friendly and experimental. We'll cover how to set up a safe, functional encaustic workspace at home or in a studio and build confidence using a torch, even if you’ve never held one before. All supplies are provided, but if you have in-progress work (up to 11" x 14"), feel free to bring it for experimentation.

Most students leave with one to two finished paintings or a collection of experimental pieces, plus the skills and inspiration to continue working with encaustic beyond the class. Space is limited to 5 students to allow for individual guidance, and classes tend to fill quickly. Once registered, you'll receive confirmation, directions to the studio, and all the details you'll need.
