In this fun and welcoming workshop, I'll lead us in a loose drawing approach that’s all about observation, memory, and emotion—not technical accuracy. This practice is a fantastic way to begin drawing without pressure, no matter your experience level.

Using the scenic backdrop of Plas Newydd Farm in Ridgefield WA, , you’ll see how these quick impressions can become meaningful visual diaries of your own adventures—whether abroad, in your own backyard, or on the farm.

This workshop is open to all levels. You don’t need to know how to draw. You just need curiosity, a sense of play, and a willingness to look a little closer at the world around you.

As part of Camas Days, I’ll be doing a free encaustic painting demo outside of Gallery 408 on Friday, July 25 from 11 am - 1 pm. Come watch me work on some photo encaustic paintings!

What is Camas Days? For two full days in July (25-26), the community of Camas celebrates with parades, music, street vendors, a wine & microbrew street and kid’s activities.

Gallery 408 is partnering with the Cascade Aids Project for an event on June 21 from 5 - 8 pm. Several gallery artists (including me) are donating a piece of art to be sold with 100% of the profits going to CAP.

The gallery will also donate 10% of profits from their June 21 sales, so anything you purchase that day will help raise funds for this worthy cause! All donated items will be marked with a specific wall tag identifying them, and this donated art is available in the gallery now, so there’s no need to wait.

Encaustic is one of the oldest forms of painting, with paint made from pure pigment mixed with wax and resin. The mixture is applied hot, then reheated to fuse the layers together. No experience is necessary for this quick start wax class.

We'll start with a group painting exercise to help you try several colors while learning the basic fusing techniques using a heat gun. All supplies will be provided.

Photographers seem especially drawn to working with wax because of the variety of ways their images can be reborn in a new medium. Working with encaustic expands the traditional methods of hand coloring photographs, also allowing you to easily add texture.

A fellow artist once told me that any mark is better than no mark, and that advice has served me well. In this class we’ll pair encaustic painting with a variety mark making materials including ink, watercolor, and my favorite “instant stamps” to avoid that dreaded blank canvas as you begin new work.

These techniques will allow you to add gestural marks at any point in your creative process to add more more spontaneity and personal expression to your work, whether or not you usually work with encaustic. All supplies will be provided.

There are several exciting ways of adding texture to your encaustic paintings and we'll explore a few of them in this class.

You can build up texture by painting through different materials onto your wax, using special brush and knife techniques to build up sections of your surface and specialty tools to remove others. All supplies will be provided and most students leave class with 1-2 finished projects.

Sketching can take many forms, so let’s find what’s right for you. Join me to learn my 90-second sketching technique which makes this accessible to anyone with even the most basic materials. This is a fun way to capture memories from a trip, relax at home, create with friends, and capture ideas while they are still fresh.
