WHIDBEY ISLAND ART RETREAT
Encaustic & Mixed Media Art Retreat
Friday - Sunday, August 14-16, 2026
Pacific Northwest Art School
Whidbey Island, Washington
All Levels Welcome
Creating with encaustic is a dream come true for mixed media artists! The wax-based paint comes in beautiful colors that you can use to easily add depth and texture to your paintings. It's one of the most forgiving mediums available, allowing you to "undo" virtually anything, giving you the freedom to be fearless and let your creativity flow. No painting or drawing experience is necessary for this class; just an adventurous spirit!
We’ll collage with wax instead of glue to incorporate papers (including photos!), fabrics, and threads.
I’ll share my technique for creating collage materials embellished with my favorite “instant stamps” that you’ll create during class, using impressions from natural materials and everyday objects. Encaustic paint can also be paired with a wide variety of materials including pastels, graphite, and artist crayons so there will be time for you to explore those too.
Don't worry if you haven't tried anything like this before. I'll have lots of tools and materials available for you to play with, and you can work in any style you choose.
All basic supplies are included except for your choice of panels, and any small photos you want to bring to cut out. I’ll send info on what types of images to bring at least a month before class. Feel free to bring your favorite thin papers, fabrics, and rubber stamps with you too.
Even if you're an experienced encaustic painter, there's always something new to experiment with. Come with an open mind and ready to create exciting work in a fun, supportive atmosphere.
