In this class, we’ll explore exciting ways to add rich texture to your encaustic paintings using a variety of techniques to create dynamic, touchable surfaces.
You’ll learn to build texture by painting through different materials and by using specialized brushwork, palette knives, and other tools to build up areas of wax while selectively carving back into others.
We’ll also discuss how texture develops through thoughtful layering—because truly compelling encaustic surfaces take time and intention. You’ll discover how layers interact, how depth is created, and why patience pays off in a big way. The result? Paintings with so much visual and physical interest that people can barely keep their hands off them!
Finally, I’ll share guidance on one of encaustic’s most talked-about rules: fusing every layer. You’ll learn when it’s essential, when it’s optional, and how to safely bend—or even break—the rule to achieve specific textural effects.
All supplies for this workshop will be provided for you, but if you have encaustic paintings in progress please bring them for an even faster start on building your texture. Don't worry if you haven't tried anything like this before, the medium is very forgiving and I'll have lots of materials available for you to work with.
