Unleash your creativity in this exciting workshop dedicated to the bold, spontaneous beauty of encaustic shellac burns! Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced artist looking to try something new, this immersive class will introduce you to a technique that's as unpredictable as it is captivating.

What to Expect

Explore how shellac reacts to intense heat to create crackled, organic textures that are impossible to duplicate by hand. You'll learn how to apply shellac, manipulate it with a torch, and experiment with custom color blends for striking, one-of-a-kind effects.

No painting or drawing experience is necessary for this encaustic class! Don't worry if you haven't tried anything like this before, the medium is very forgiving.

You'll Learn

Shellac Burn Effects: Create mesmerizing patterns by applying and burning shellac. You'll have plenty of materials to explore and the freedom to work in any style you like.

Torch Techniques & Safety: Gain confidence using a torch, even if you’ve never held one before. We’ll focus on safe, practical handling from start to finish.

Color Mixing: Work with tinted shellac and learn my 2 favorite ways to mix your own beautiful hues.

Studio Safety & Setup: Learn how to create a safe, functional encaustic workspace where you can burn shellac—whether at home or in a studio.

* PREREQUISITE: Some experience with basic encaustic painting is necessary to get the most out of this course, but you don't need to be an expert. If you have never tried this before but want to join us, please complete any of these classes before this one starts: Intro to Encaustic Painting or Discover Encaustic Collage.

If you have some experience painting with encaustic on your own then you'll be at the right level for this class. I offer offer rich, personalized instruction that also challenges painters with more encaustic experience to consider advanced ideas and techniques.

All supplies will be provided for you so all you have to do is show up and have fun. If you have paintings in progress please bring them in sizes up to about 12" on the longest side so you can get right to experimenting with the shellac mixture.

Most students leave class with 1 - 2 completed paintings or several sample pieces, plus a deeper understanding of the encaustic process, and the know-how to keep creating beyond the classroom.
